The first rule of making war: create an enemy.
The Bush administration employed a very basic rhetorical strategy for creating the war on terror (you are either with us or against us), however, as this war permutates – and America seeks to be involved in every permuatation – they are challenged to adapt that rhetorical device.
Despite Bush’s reputation as an intellectual lightweight, his word choices are always worth analyzing for politics.
Clearly, it is in the best political interests of the “American War on Terror” if the current conflict in Lebanon is seen as a “moment of clarity.” You can almost taste the innuendo – the need to establish clear sides in this current conflict. Bush needs to contextualize his own country’s position.
The fact is, there is no clear winner or loser in this conflict. The Bush administration can easily support Israel, but it has some work to do equivicating “resolve” to see the conflict through with a “win” for the war on terror, especially when innocent Lebanese citizens are being killed alongside Hezbollah.
